Day 5 - on to Maine

This was a big day's driving, as we went north through Massachusetts, then New Hampshire and then in to Maine.  Lunch was in Bath, a picturesque coastal fishing village. Little did we know that every village we went through (or so it seemed) was to be just as picturesque.


Once again it surprised us how densely populated the US is (or most of the bits we've seen, anyway.  The entire road north was a stream of hamlets and towns, with almost no breaks between them.  Even where it felt rural, the road was littered with small businesses - some no longer in existence, and many for sale, but all of it evidence of the entrepreneurial spirit of the 'mericans.

We drove as long as we could, ending up in a gem of a place called Belfast.  According to a local brochure, it's in the Top 10 places for something like quality of life in the US!  The only bad thing I can say about it is that by the time we got around to strolling the main street, the yarn store, craft store, book stores (of which there were many) and the ice cream store had all closed!! Here's a sample of what you (and in some respects, we) missed:

The weather has been great too, with mists occasionally rolling in.  


We will definitely come back to Maine.
