Winter is here...

Last week we had our second snowfall of the season (while you were all being inundated with rain, so we hear).


We woke up to a light blanket of snow everywhere - just gorgeous:

It didn't come as a complete surprise though, the temperatures had been plunging to well below zero at night (and staying thereabouts during the day too!).


Unfortunately it coincided with some ice rain (as they call black ice over here), so it was quite hazardous getting around, whether on foot or by car.  The school buses were all cancelled that day, which didn't have much of an impact as it was a PD day for the whole school district, but lots of car crashes were reported in the paper.


As the kids had a day off school, John took the day off and we ventured out west to a place called Carp.  It's the location of the Diefenbunker (so named because the post-war Prime Minister of the time was called Diefenbaker) the location of Canada's cold war era bunker.  The plan was to evacuate the core of the Canadian Government here in the event of a nuclear strike in North America.  It operated until 1996, staffed around the clock (although never used for it's intended purpose, thankfully) and it's a fascinating insight into the cold war, and how close Canada was to the "action".

Even the kids enjoyed it, thanks to a knowledgeable volunteer guide, who used to work here.

Yes, I am still hanging out washing (some of you will know how much I enjoy line drying my laundry!).  The sheets mostly dried that day - except for a few frozen bits!  Nothing that 5 or 10 minutes in the dryer couldn't finish.  I'm finding that things dry really well on the line here - better than at home.  Lots of breeze and plenty of sun (north facing).
