Our place isn't old, it must be about 20 to 30 years old, built right on the banks of the river which is no longer allowed, but it does feel like we're in the country:
It's going to be gorgeous living here in the Summer, Fall and Spring, and as the river freezes during winter, it should be interesting then as well. We have use of a kayak when the river runs, and apparently you can cross country ski on it too, but we're more likely to try our hand at ice skating on the canal, which is only a few blocks away.
This is what our walks around the area have turned up so far:

We are surrounded by parks, this one just down the road has a water playgound:
Yes! we have water here, the kids were quick to point out a man hosing down his car and front pathway, and it won't be too long until I have a bath too.
What I didn't find, although it's early days yet, is a decent place for a coffee. Not just in our local shopping strip, but along the canal, near all the lovely parks close to the city, or even at the Ottawa farmers market, which is just over the canal in The Glebe. (We went there today and stocked up on good food and had a bite to eat, but alas, no coffee*). I keep saying that I need to set up a little coffee cart business, but really I'd be happy to be a customer.
Tomorrow John starts work, and it's a public holiday here in Ontario, but not in Gatineau, so he'll be working while most people enjoy a long weekend. We'll take advantage of the light traffic (it's not exactly heavy anyway) to drive him over there, our first trip to Quebec. Then the kids and I have 5 WEEKS to amuse ourselves until school starts. Hmmm....
* "coffee" defined here as REAL espresso coffee
