The canal is closed, Winterlude is a non-event, the snow is melting and even the river has pools of water on it:
I went for a walk today and saw a few in shorts and T-shirts and lots in light clothing. It was a very different feeling. The thaw that heralds Spring is meant to be a joyous time, but we'd like to put it on hold for another 3 weeks.
If this weather keeps up there'll be no more skating. It just doesn't bear thinking about.
We do have some colder weather forecast, but it seems that Wiarton Wilie the groundhog was right* and we will have an early spring. Others are moaning about winter and wishing it was over, but honestly, we're not ready! The winter just hasn't been as bad or extreme as we were led to believe. Sure it's really cold, but most of the days are gorgeous - sparkling blue sky and sunshine with no clouds in sight.
Our house faces south, so as well as having a great view of the Rideau River, we get sunshine pouring through the windows for most of the day, so that we often don't really need the heater on until the evening. It's 20 degrees inside today.
So long as you spend that 10 minutes rugging up before walking out the door - coat? scarf? hat? gloves? thermal underwear? then you're good to go, as they say, and you don't really feel the cold. Well, your face, ears and nose might suffer a bit but having the right gear means that the cold doesn't stop you doing much.
Even if the weather gets cold again, there's no guarantee that the canal will re-open. It's a magical thing to see so many people skating along it, day and night. Lots use it to commute to work.
